Online Gambling has become a popular form of gambling for many people around the world. It is convenient and can be done from anywhere with an internet connection. It offers a variety of games including slots, table games and sports betting. Some countries prohibit it, while others regulate and license it. However, there are risks associated with Online Gambling such as lack of regulation, unfair odds and rigged games.
This article reviews the current knowledge about the risk factors and protective factors for online gambling. A systematic literature review was conducted using three different academic databases: PubMed, PsychInfo and Scopus. Syntaxes were launched for keywords like “online gambling” and a variety of terms related to it such as risk factors, protective factors, predictors, correlates etc. The articles selected for review were those that met the inclusion criteria.
Several studies report that gambling addiction can have a wide range of negative effects on an individual’s life. These include financial problems, emotional stress, social isolation, decline in work or academic performance, health issues and legal problems. In addition, the secrecy that is associated with gambling can lead to relationship conflicts.
Behavioral therapy can be effective in helping individuals overcome online gambling addiction. This type of therapy is based on the principle that harmful thought patterns and behaviors are changed through intervention and counseling. There are a number of treatment options available, including self-exclusion from online gambling sites, the use of content blockers, limiting access to funds, managing gambling triggers, finding alternative activities, seeking professional help, and taking medication if necessary.
